Napping occasionally reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by half

A study conducted by the University Hospital of Lausanne (Switzerland) ensures that people who take a nap once or twice a week have a lower risk of getting cardiovascular disease.

Do you like to sleep for a while after eating? Does the nap have benefits for our health? The positive aspects of practicing this routine have been protagonists of multiple investigations, many of them defending the famous nap. In fact, a study published in the journal Neurobiology of Learning and Memory in 2015 by the University of Saarland (Germany) assured that resting an hour a day could improve our short-term memory.

To what extent does our health improve? A new study carried out by the University Hospital of Lausanne (Switzerland), published in the journal Heart, reveals that those people who usually take a nap only once or twice a week have a lower risk of contracting cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks , for example.

Almost 50% less risk of cardiovascular attack

The frequency with which we nap directly influences the chances of having a cardiovascular attack, they confirm. In addition, people who occasionally rested are at half the risk of having a heart attack than those who never take a nap throughout the week.

However, people who used to nap routinely, that is, all or almost every day, had greater sleepiness and obstructive sleep apnea. In addition, the risk of cardiovascular disease, although associated with other health factors, increased by 67 percent.

How have these results been achieved? At the time of the study, the team of researchers took factors such as age, sleep hours and health risks in the 3,462 people in Lausanne (Switzerland). The first test took place between the period of 2009 and 2012 and served to gather all the necessary information about the health status of each of the people participating in the observational study.

Then, over a period of five years, everyone’s health was monitored for important cardiovascular disorders. The results revealed that more than half did not take a nap, while about 20 percent did so at least once a week, 12 percent three to five times and 11 percent almost every day.

“People who take a few naps compensate for the lack of nighttime sleep and, therefore, this rest can have a stress-relieving effect.

In contrast, the reason why people take frequent naps may be due to an underlying chronic condition. However, this is an observational study and we cannot be sure of the mechanism, ”concluded the lead author of the study, Sinc Nadine Hausler.
