Japan’s drive to cyborg technology

In a plan that has more than 900 million dollars in budget, cyborg technology research will be encouraged, among other areas.

In Japan they have reviewed the future needs of the country and have decided to promote research in certain areas. Many of these coincide with the interests of the global world. The Japanese government plan has been set in areas such as reforestation or recycling of industrial waste.

However, there are other points on the list that attract attention. These are matters as seemingly futuristic as artificial hibernation or cyborg technology. They are areas little or nothing explored and wrapped in a halo of unreality.

The hibernation of living beings that will allow them to wake up in the future instantly recalls the myth of Walt Disney or the movie Demolition Man, with Stallone acting as a thawed human.

The case of cyborg technology is different. His references are not only found in science fiction or urban legends. Those who fit into this movement, halfway between experimental technology and subculture, define cyborg as a person who houses an electronic or mechanical element in their body. The most famous is perhaps Neil Harbisson, known for an antenna implanted in his skull and for being legally recognized with this category by a government agency.

But cyborg technology does not end in technological eccentricities, such as Harbisson’s. It can also be used to replace the body’s own deficiencies with technology. An implanted robotic arm or leg could put its user in this category. Although at the moment this seems more appealing without major implications.

The truth is that in this direction the Japanese government wants to deepen. The plan consists of the use of 921 million dollars for research projects. Among them are those related to cyborg technology.

Solutions for the society of the future

The Japanese government has launched this initiative in order to alleviate present and future problems. One of them is the shortage of labor, a consequence of the aging population. In this sense, having electromechanical parts could help people cope with some jobs.

It goes without saying that there are still only projects embarked on a mere exploration. As is done with robotics, a field in which the country has placed hopes to alleviate labor problems.

In total there are 25 research areas. In all of them, Japan will invest almost $ 1 billion in the first five years. The results are expected between 2035 and 2060, a reasonable time to present a balance on such futuristic aspects.
