The architecture of the glass skyscrapers poses a problem that forces to increase the energy expenditure destined to the construction and the regulation of the temperature.

If you have been inside a building with the roofs and the glass facade during a very sunny day, you may have noticed how the temperature rises considerably. Now, architects and engineers have put the spotlight on the difficulty and the high cost of cooling these huge skyscrapers.

You just have to take a look at the main cities around the world to check the nature of its most modern buildings. Business parks, offices and shopping centers are populated by skyscrapers with the glass facade. This type of construction has become very popular thanks to a visual finish that stylizes the panorama of the cities and the great views and natural light it provides.

Air conditioning consumption has multiplied
Glass skyscrapers stand as an unsustainable structure within the present environmental context and for years to come. The direct impact of sunlight produces heat that the glass absorbs, and fails to let it escape naturally. The main – and almost unique – solution proposed to mitigate the excessive heating of buildings is air conditioning.

However, according to a recent report by The Guardian, since 2000 the power for air conditioning has doubled to 14% of the total energy currently in use.

Likewise, the International Energy Agency has estimated that 40% of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere come from the construction, demolition and regulation of building temperatures.

The use of glass in construction has the advantage of retaining heat naturally in colder climates. The future of skyscrapers involves finding an alternative that allows combining the use of smaller glass windows and a new type of more opaque material that blocks the sun in the warmer months.
