Digital nomads: working remotely is possible

Going to the office every day and sitting in the same chair for more than eight hours tends to disappear. Working remotely is becoming more common. What advantages and disadvantages does this trend imply?

If twenty years ago we had been told that it would be possible to work for a Spanish company from a beach in Bali we would have laughed. However, today this is possible, thanks to technology and the new philosophy of many companies that focus on achieving objectives. Heating the chair was never productive, so companies are increasingly committed to projects with competing teams, but they do not have to be in the same physical space.

With this new way of working, the so-called digital nomads are born, people who work remotely instead of from a fixed position. These new employees own their time and their space, they organize how they want, as long as they reach the objectives set by the company. But, really, what does this mean for companies and workers?

In the first place, it favors the hunting of talent, because it doesn’t matter where you are from or where you are, since all you need is to have a good internet connection to maintain good communication with the company. There are websites, such as Nomadlist, that promote “the freedom of global movement through working remotely” offering users a list of the most favorable cities for this practice. Its ranking is based on the cost of living of the place, security, climate, network and LGTBI tolerance, among others.

Another relevant value, especially for companies, is the cost savings in physical positions. Expenses on office supplies, electricity and water are reduced, for example. In addition, by having a team distributed by different parts of the world, the company will be open for 24 hours. Although if the company never sleeps, it is possible that neither do you, so it is advisable to establish a specific schedule so as not to end your motivation early.

If the organization is correct, this work methodology is much more efficient than the traditional one, since objectives are established and not time of dedication. Companies know that if the worker is good, and he carries out his work, it doesn’t matter if he does it in three hours and at four in the morning. And this implies an even more interesting factor: family reconciliation begins to be real.

Although it may seem wonderful, it also has some disadvantages, such as the loss of direct contact with other partners. It is possible that you end up missing that charlatan accounting man, who always managed to get you a smile on gray days. However, the most important thing is that the option exists, knowing if it is appropriate or not will depend on each worker.
